The Canadian Meat Goat Association (CMGA), in collaboration with the Canadian National Goat Federation (CNGF) and the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA), is currently working to address ongoing challenges related to approved ear tag options for goats in Canada.
⚠️ Background
As many producers are aware, the discontinuation of the Allflex Combo tag has significantly reduced the number of approved indicator options available.
In response, many producers have turned to a Shearwell tag. However, concerns have been raised—particularly among Boer goat producers—as this tag has a narrower opening, which has led to ear injuries, infections, and herd health issues in some cases.
🔍 Proposed Solution
A modified Shearwell tag with a slightly wider opening has been identified as a promising alternative. Initial testing with producers who experienced issues has shown positive results.
However, this tag is not yet pre-approved, and additional testing across multiple herds is required before approval can be granted.
🐐 Call for Participants
CNGF is currently seeking goat producers across Canada to participate in a tag trial.
We are specifically looking for herds with large floppy ears, including:
