The Canadian Meat Goat Association is pleased to launch its 2026 Type Evaluation campaign, with evaluations planned for fall 2026.
Whether you are looking to make more informed breeding decisions, identify the strengths and weaknesses within your herd, or add another valuable tool to your breeding program, Type Evaluation provides an objective and standardized assessment of your Boer goats.
What is Type Evaluation?
Type Evaluation compares an animal to the ideal Canadian Boer Goat using a detailed scorecard and a standardized evaluation system. Trained CMGA classifiers assess several measurable traits, such as structure, muscling and breed character. Each eligible animal receives scores for individual traits as well as an overall rating.
Unlike the show ring, where animals are compared with others presented on a particular day, Type Evaluation provides breeders with an individual assessment of each animal against the breed ideal. The results can help identify strengths and weaknesses within the herd and support breeding and culling decisions aimed at improving productivity, longevity and overall herd quality.
Who can participate?
The 2026 campaign is open to CMGA members.
Registered Percentage and Purebred Boer goats may receive an official evaluation provided they meet the program requirements. Breeders may also choose to have unregistered animals evaluated; individual type traits will be assessed, but no final score will be calculated.
Does must have kidded at least once and within one year of the evaluation, while bucks must be at least one year of age. Complete animal eligibility and identification requirements are provided in the 2026 Breeder Information document.
2026 Fees
The site fee is $300, plus the following per-animal fees:
- 1–19 animals: $23/animal
- 20–49 animals: $20/animal
- 50 animals or more: $15/animal
- Applicable taxes will be added.
The site fee and payment for the estimated number of animals must accompany the application.
How will the campaign work?
There is no minimum number of farms or animals required for the 2026 campaign. With trained classifiers now available in most regions of Canada, CMGA will make every effort to coordinate participating farms and classifier schedules to help minimize costs. Evaluations are planned for fall 2026, and participating breeders will be contacted by their classifier approximately three weeks in advance to organize the schedule of visits.
